Our credentials

Our investment banking team has considerable local and global experience. Our executives have worked on many of New Zealand’s most significant recent transactions.

Forsyth Barr’s investment banking clients include leading New Zealand corporates, both NZX-listed and private companies; public organisations such as the New Zealand Government, local councils and related entities, private equity firms, and a range of international parties.

Forsyth Barr is committed to providing investment banking services within New Zealand. In June 2010 we hired four senior investment banking executives to complement the existing team and broaden our relationship network. This strengthening of the investment banking team aligns with the firm’s growth in its retail advisor network throughout New Zealand.

In 2011, Forsyth Barr helped clients raise over $1.7 billion in capital, and was mandated to advise parties both in New Zealand and offshore.

Forsyth Barr clients benefit from our strong relationships with a number of international investment banks that do not have a New Zealand presence. These relationships allow us to reach people and organisations in offshore markets on behalf of clients.

Our expertise

Equity Capital Markets

Our investment banking team’s experience covers the full range of public market equity issuance, from large scale initial public offerings and rights issues to smaller scale secondary placements and share buy backs.

Our investment banking team works closely with the Forsyth Barr institutional equities team to understand the current views of the New Zealand institutional investment community. They also consult regularly with our retail network for an insight into current advisor views. The investment banking team tailors its advice to clients to incorporate these views and work towards the most appropriate solution for both the client and the market.

In addition to the investment banking team’s lead management and advisory services, Forsyth Barr’s ability to arrange underwriting for appropriately structured transactions can provide added certainty for clients in executing equity capital markets transactions.

Debt Capital Markets

Forsyth Barr possesses the strongest New Zealand public debt capital market combination of origination, distribution and support. Over the last three years, we have been part of the management syndicate on more listed debt capital market transactions than any other New Zealand broker. We also provide strong ongoing secondary market support to debt issues, as evidenced by Forsyth Barr having the leading market share in NZDX secondary market trading over the same time period.

The investment banking team consistently provides robust and reliable demand and pricing indications backed by strong links with the Forsyth Barr institutional fixed interest team and retail network.

Our support of a debt issue sends a strong positive signal to the rest of the market and we have a sound reputation regarding firm commitments in bookbuild processes.

As a result of working cohesively with the other parts of Forsyth Barr, the investment banking team is able to add tangible value to clients by providing sound, market-based advice on structuring, marketing and distributing new debt issues.

Mergers & Acquisitions and Corporate Advisory

Members of the Forsyth Barr investment banking team have worked as financial advisors on some of New Zealand’s largest M&A transactions, including:

  • The sale of Yellow Pages (The Banker, Deal of the Year 2007)
  • The sale of EnviroWaste
  • The public market takeover of CanWest Mediaworks
  • The divestment by the New Zealand Government of Contact Energy
