Transfers from United Kingdom schemes
If you have moved back to New Zealand permanently, it makes sense to have your superannuation back home as well. KiwiSaver is a transparent retirement savings method so you will be able to easily keep track of your balance and where it is invested. In addition, you will be able to access the monies in accordance with KiwiSaver rules enabling you to access tax free lump sums. By way of comparison, any pension income stream in the UK will be assessable and taxed at marginal income tax rates.
The Forsyth Barr KiwiSaver Scheme is registered as a Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (reference QROPS 502428). We can assist you to transfer funds from a UK pension scheme and you may continue to receive UK tax relief on the transferred amount.
Transfers to and from Australian superannuation funds
A Memorandum of Understanding to establish a Trans-Tasman retirement savings portability scheme enabling New Zealanders to transfer their Australian superannuation funds back to New Zealand and vice-versa has been signed. Legislation which has been passed (but has not currently commenced) will enable the full value of membersʼ interests in KiwiSaver Schemes (net of fees and taxes) to be transferred to an Australian complying superannuation scheme upon permanent emigration to Australia instead of withdrawing.
The Australian Government is still working on the details of the transfer of interests in Australian superannuation funds to KiwiSaver Schemes upon permanent emigration to New Zealand. Australian legislation is expected to be enacted in 2011.
