Forsyth Barr is a full service investment bank. We are a market leader in raising equity and debt through New Zealand’s capital markets. We also advise companies and institutions on mergers and acquisitions, divestments, valuation, capital structure, cost of capital and dividend policy.
Our clients include NZX-listed and private corporates, public organisations such as the New Zealand Government, local councils and related entities, private equity firms, and a range of international parties.
Forsyth Barr clients benefit from our strong relationships with a number of international investment banks that do not have a New Zealand presence. These relationships allow us to reach people and organisations in offshore markets on behalf of clients.
Our investment banking team has considerable local and global experience, with our executives having worked on many of New Zealand’s most significant recent transactions.
In 2018, Forsyth Barr advised on almost $3 billion worth of transactions, advising parties both in New Zealand and offshore.
None of Forsyth Barr Limited or its related companies are registered banks.

Mergers & Acquisitions and Corporate Advisory
Our team offers a full range of corporate advisory services, including mergers, acquisitions, takeover offers, divestments, restructuring and capital structure advice. Our clients include corporates, private equity groups, public organisations and offshore parties. Members of the Forsyth Barr investment banking team have advised on some of New Zealand’s largest and most recent M&A transactions, including the $140m takeover by scheme of Methven, PEP’s $270m acquisition of Metrix, takeover defence roles for Abano ($312m) and Hellaby ($431m), the $329m aggregation of 17 retirement villages and aged care facilities to form Arvida and the acquisition and funding of $1.1 billion for Symbion by EBOS.
Equity Capital Markets
Our investment banking team’s experience covers the full range of public market equity issuance, from large scale initial public offerings and rights issues to smaller scale secondary placements and share buy backs.
Our investment banking team works closely with the Forsyth Barr institutional equities team to understand the current views of the New Zealand institutional investment community. They also consult regularly with our retail network for an insight into current advisor views. The investment banking team tailors its advice to clients to incorporate these views and work towards the most appropriate solution for both the client and the market.
In addition to the investment banking team’s lead management and advisory services, Forsyth Barr’s ability to arrange underwriting for appropriately structured transactions can provide added certainty for clients in executing equity capital markets transactions.
Debt Capital Markets
Forsyth Barr possesses one of the strongest New Zealand public debt capital market combinations of origination, distribution and support.
As a result of working cohesively with the other parts of Forsyth Barr, the investment banking team is able to add tangible value to clients by providing sound, market-based advice on structuring, marketing and distributing new debt issues.
