Forsyth Barr is pleased to release The Pulse of NZ Business, Forsyth Barr's Business Survey.

Running since 2022, the survey takes the pulse of business leaders and decision makers from large corporates to small and medium size enterprise. With the last survey falling in January, this edition offers a unique snapshot of before and the fallout from the pressure on energy prices caused by the Middle East conflict.

Key insights from the September 2026 survey include:

  • Businesses are net positive on the direction of the economy, with 53% of respondents believing the NZ economy is on the right track v 22% who believe it's on the wrong track
  • There has been an improvement in demand, with 2x as many respondents reporting increased demand in the last three months (49% v 22%)
  • Over 50% of respondents expect a better 12 months ahead, while only 14% expect a worse 12 months in the future
  • 2/3rds of respondents see cost inflation as a top three challenge facing their business
  • 80% of respondents who view the election as important to their business say the re-election of some form of the current government is most favourable
